Dr. Bird can help you achieve your educational goals

In-person or virtual tutoring for high school algebra and geometry, elementary and middle school math, and elementary reading and writing.

Cindy McGilvrey, PhD

~ known as dr. bird, professional tutor and consultant ~

In third grade, I knew that I would go to college and become a teacher. And years later, teaching is not a job to me; it is a vocation, a passion, and a lifestyle.

My educational career has been diverse and rewarding, from teaching secondary and university courses to serving as a violence and drug prevention-teaching specialist. Later, with adult alternative education, I found my perfect niche as I helped adults who had previously dropped out return to school and earn a fully accredited high school diploma. Working with students one-on-one is one of my teaching strengths – struggling students, flourishing students, and every student in between. in my retirement Dr. Bird’s Consulting and Tutoring, LLC allows me to help students gain confidence and master subject material.  Learn more

testimonials about me and my work

Kind words bloom like flowers

One of the rewards of teaching is the positive comments from students who are working toward a goal AND from those who have achieved their dreams. Other blessings come from co-workers, past and present.

Dr. Cindy is amazing, patient, and kind. When I did not understand something, she would explain it in a different way. She took the time to see how I learned. She is very hands-on and dedicated. I unconditionally recommend her. Now that I am a college student, I will continue to use her services.

Rhymes with Kangaroo

“Just think of a kangaroo!” the big-as-a-room-full-of-pillows woman chortled. “Then you will remember my name; it rhymes with kangaroo: Mrs. Ducroix!” I was enthralled with my third grade teacher from the instant I spotted her—all 250 pounds of her—my imagination was ignited and captured by the kangaroo imagery. After school, as I colored at the…

You Haven’t Heard Me Sing

In mid 1990s middle school language, “frequent flyers” referred to the students who were frequently referred to the assistant principal for (what was deemed by a classroom teacher to be) inappropriate behavior. I was a middle school Language Arts teacher and team leader at this time and enrolled in graduate school pursuing my master’s degree….

“CMack’s Angels” used the vocal music annex for rehearsals. It contained a piano and risers; the students inevitably arrived before me. They gathered on the annex porch steps and loudly insulted one another. Overlapping accusations of “big head,” and “fake Nike,” and “butter teeth,” and “big juicy girl” could be heard by the neighbors across…
